I’m sure everyone has recently seen the phrase “that awkward moment when…” all over the place as a sort of comical introduction to a funny anecdote about an awkward situation. And yes, it makes me laugh quite often.
But to be honest, I’m losing patience with it. As far as I can tell, though it may have started out as someone making a genuinely funny joke about a genuinely awkward moment they’ve encountered, it’s now descended into anyone and everyone inserting random phrases onto the end of it. “That awkward moment when you congratulate a fat woman on the baby”, “That awkward moment when someone says ‘You two should go out!’” and “That awkward moment when you’re checking yourself out in a window and then realise there’s someone inside.”. Yes, yes they would be awkward moments.
But when it’s ended up with things like “That awkward moment when your mum says no to plans you’ve already made”, “That awkward moment when you type your password into the username box” and “That awkward moment when you fall in love with your best friend”, I can’t help but feel that there is something wrong with the general population. There are three obvious possibilities. Either all these people:
a) are extremely socially awkward and find the least awkward of situations awkward
b) are able to only ever experience one emotion: awkwardness
or
c) need to expand their vocabulary beyond the word “awkward”.
Let’s consider the definition of the word awkward. www.dictionary.com tells us this:
awkward [awk-werd] - adjective
1. lacking skill or dexterity; clumsy.
2. lacking grace or ease in movement: an awkward gesture; an awkward dancer.
3. lacking social graces or manners: a simple, awkward frontiersman.
4. not well planned or designed for easy or effective use: an awkward instrument; an awkward method.
5. requiring caution; somewhat hazardous; dangerous: an awkward turn in the road.
“That awkward moment when you fall in love with your best friend” … is that moment really awkward? No. No it’s not. Yes it could GET awkward, but I think a more applicable word for this particular moment would be “wonderful”, “amazing”, or “potentially friendship-ruining”.
Of course I do appreciate the fact that sometimes these jokes can be very funny. But a lot of them are just ridiculous. Does “that awkward moment when you’ve got 500 songs on your iPod but aren’t in the mood to listen to any of them” really fill you with that horrible sinking feeling that this is going to come back and haunt you, or do you start thinking of ways to avoid seeing your iPod so you don’t have to endure an extended, nervous silence with it? If it does, you seriously need to sort your life out. It’s not normal to encounter feelings of guilt and embarrassment every time you skip The Ketchup Song.
“That awkward moment when your mood swings more than a kid at recess”. So you have mood swings! That’s not awkward! You’re just making the joke “your mood swings more than a kid at recess” and putting “that awkward moment” onto the beginning of it! …grr. Make the joke somewhere else in some other context and I’m sure it’s just hilaaaaarious…
There are some ironic uses of it like “That awkward moment when Rebecca Black doesn’t know which seat to take” and “That awkward moment when you realise Osama Bin Laden made 7 horcruxes” which can make you laugh, but as you might maybe may have noticed from this little rant I’m having, I’m not happy about people telling me about ‘awkward’ moments that AREN’T AWKWARD (or ironic).
Rant over. Feel free to make as many awkward moment jokes as you like.
As long as they’re funny.

It’s been nearly 2 months since I posted anything whatsoever on Tumblr - I’ve been a little lacking in inspiration, so I apologise.
But it’s 2012 now, and surely that must fill me with a tiny bit of inspiration… new starts, new opportunities? Here’s what’s waiting for me in 2012…
My dad is turning 50.
I am turning 20.

My eldest brother is getting married.
I’m finishing my second year at university.
London 2012 Olympics are taking place - and hells YEAH I’m going to see the triathlon!
I’m starting my third and final year of uni

Then 2012 will wind up and 2013 will roll around with even scarier prospects coming up for that year…
But that’s all that I’ve planned so far - the things I want to do are a zillion times longer than that, and for now, they’re my little secret… ;) Hopefully they will materialise nicely, and that list will become a little longer and more exciting…
